Fascinating orchids

in the gardenVanda orchids are native to tropical South Asia and grow well in warm climates.

Vanda is at home in the Caribbean, Florida, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand where they are grown extensively in gardens and as cut flowers for export. There are approximately 60 species and they are one of the easiest orchids to grow. Vanda produces colourful blooms of pink, purple, white and fuchsia.

They are 3 types of Vanda orchid:-

1. Strap-leaf with broad flat leaves and showy blooms

2. Terete with round pencil-shaped leaves that grows in full sun

3. Semi Terete which are hybrids with an intermediate leaf shape

The growth of Vanda orchid comes from the crown of the plant and the flower spikes hold 8-10 blooms each.  Mature Vanda produce 2 to 3 spikes several times per year.

They can be grown in full sun, although a few shade trees in the garden would protect them from the harsh mid-day sun.  Vanda can be grown in orchid baskets with their roots dangling in the air or strapped on a wallaba post or a tree stump.

They should be watered daily. The hotter the temperature the more water is needed.  Fertilize regularly with Miracle Gro Bloom Booster once per week and during the rest period with Miracle Gro All Purpose.

Until next week, happy gardening.
