Owners of Chinese store charged with beating girl

Two Chinese nationals accused of beating an 11-year-old girl whom they said entered their Croal Street store to steal were today admitted to bail in the sum of $80,000 each when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

The allegation against Jiang Ping Ren, 32, and her husband Jun Zhang, 42 is that on January 4 they assaulted the child.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them by Magistrate Judy Latchman.

In its facts, the prosecution stated that the defendants cuffed, slapped, kicked and spat on the child.

Attorney Satyesh Kissoon who represented the jointly-charged duo was successful in retaining his clients’ pretrial liberty.

They will next appear in court on January 28.
