Bus driver held over rape of mentally-challenged woman

A West Berbice minibus driver has been taken into custody at the Fort Wellington Police Station for allegedly raping a mentally challenged 18-year-old woman.

Police sources told this newspaper that charges are expected to be laid against the man following the return of the file from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Residents have expressed outrage at the actions of the man. They could not believe that he would “take advantage of the girl knowing she is in that condition.” Reports are that relatives of the woman, who was a passenger in his bus, dealt the man a good beating after they found out. He had to seek treatment at the hospital.

And in another matter, a 15-year-old student was raped by her stepbrother who came from Suriname to spend the Christmas holidays.
The 32-year-old man is currently on the run and relatives are fearful that he had already left the country. Police are on the hunt for him.
