Man accused of stealing from cousin’s house

A man was yesterday remanded on charges that he broke into his cousin’s house and stole a sum of money and a quantity of gold jewellery.
Quincy Williams, 24, of 11 Atlantic Ville, East Coast Demerara, was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Williams is that on January 16, at Lot 7 D’Urban Street, Lodge, Georgetown, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Leon Sealy and stole $60,000, US$900 and a quantity of gold jewellery, all totalling $590,000 and which was the property of Sealy.
Williams was not required to plead to the indictable charge of break and enter and larceny when it was read to him by Magistrate Alan Wilson, before whom he appeared.

Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, who represented Williams, said that his client is innocent of the charge levelled against him, while arguing that the prosecution’s case is weak.

Fung-a-Fat said that according to his instructions, Sealy made up “the whole story” to get his client into trouble.
In an application for bail, the lawyer said that his client had no antecedents, posed no risk of flight and had been cooperating with police investigations.
Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick, however, objected to counsel’s bail application, stating that there are witnesses to testify to the commission of the crime.
Bostwick explained that the parties are cousins and that the defendant once resided with the complainant at the address in dispute.

After listening to submissions on both sides, the magistrate acceded to the prosecutor’s request and informed the accused that he would be remanded to prison.

The matter will be called again on January 30.
