Man accused of assaulting woman outside club

A man was yesterday charged with assaulting a woman who he found drinking with his girlfriend.
It is alleged that Quacy John, 28, carried out the assault on Susan Williams, with the intent to cause her actual bodily harm, in front of Palm Court, on Main Street on January 24.

John, of 62 Blygezight Gardens, Campbellville, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Burgett Grant told the court that on the day in question, John went to Palm Court and saw Williams and his girlfriend drinking. She said that he got upset and allegedly upturned the table they were sitting at.

Grant added that as Williams boarded a car after leaving the nightclub, John opened the vehicle door and reportedly dealt her a cuff to the face. The matter was reported to the police and John was subsequently arrested.

John’s lawyer told the court that her client posed no risk of flight, and added that while he had one previous matter before the court, it was dismissed. The lawyer stated that the man is a civil contractor at the Splashmins Fun Park and Resort.

The prosecution had no objections to John being granted bail but Williams’s attorney Gordon Gilhuys objected, pointing out his client’s bruised face.
The magistrate subsequently granted John bail in the sum of $25,000 and he was also placed on a bond to keep the peace, pending the determination of the matter.

The case will be called again on February 25 for reports and fixtures.
