Man charged with assaulting wife granted bail, sent for counselling

A father of five accused of unlawfully assaulting his wife was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 and sent for counselling, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Mark Persaud, 32, is that on January 25 at Hadfield Street, he unlawfully assaulted Nicola France.

Persaud pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

Persaud’s lawyer Paul Fung-a-Fat told the court that this was the first time his client had tried something like that. He said his client had no pending or previous matters before the court and he was a father of five.

Counsel further went on to say that the defendant and the virtual complainant are husband and wife and that on the day in question an argument broke out between them and he fired a slap at her.

Fung-a-Fat then informed the court that France had declined to offer evidence against his client.

Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick had no objection to Persaud being granted bail.

Persaud was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 and was asked to attend counselling at Help and Shelter.

He was also placed on a bond to keep the peace pending the determination of the matter.

He will make his next court appearance on March 8.
