PI into Sophia human torch death opens

The preliminary inquiry into the death of ‘B’ Field, Sophia mother Carmelita Jones commenced yesterday at the Sparendaam Magistrate Court.
Four witnesses, including neighbours and Jones’s mother along with her sister testified in the presence of alleged assailant, Jones’s reputed husband Melroy Simpson.

Magistrate Alex Moore presided over the matter.

Carmelita Jones was turned into a human torch on September 18, 2012 after she and her reputed husband had an argument over milk.

Jones succumbed 10 days after being a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital in the Burn Care Unit.

Simpson was previously charged on September 21 at the Sparendaam Magistrate Court with inflicting grievous bodily harm and released on $200,000 bail.

He was re-arrested on the day Jones died.
