Police say Danielstown man shot in confrontation

At about 0500h today, police ranks went to the home of Leon Alphonso, 38 years of Danielstown, Essequibo Coast, who is believed to be mentally unstable.

Police said this followed reports of alleged damage to property, assault, threatening behaviour and indecent exposure made against him to the police.

During efforts to apprehend him, Alphonso attacked the police with a cutlass and a claw bar causing the police to resort to the use of force and he was shot to his left foot, the police said.

Alphonso was taken to the Suddie Hospital where he was treated and sent away. He is in police custody.

Investigations are in progress.
