Miner remanded over wounding

Miner Rayburn Avery, who is accused of wounding another man using a gun, was yesterday remanded to prison.

The allegation against Avery, 28, is that on January 22, at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Carlton Butler.

Avery, of Albouystown, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Attorney Gordon Gilhuys, who represented Avery, stated that he inquired about the case on Monday at the court and informed that his client was kept in police custody beyond 72 hours without charge.

Magistrate Lovell stated that she was concerned about the defendant being held in prison beyond 72 hours.

When asked if there were objections to bail, police prosecutor Alexis David-Hossanah stressed that Avery used a gun to commit the crime. Gilhuys noted that the use of the weapon was merely an allegation.

The prosecutor also stated that Avery committed an offence while he had a pending charge.

After listening to submissions, the magistrate denied bail and remanded Avery to prison until the next court date, which was set at February 6.
