Car washer accused of stealing ‘Joey’ Jagan’s iPhone

A man accused of stealing an Apple iPhone from Dr Cheddi ‘Joey’ Jagan Jnr was yesterday refused bail when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Lyndin Bransville is that on January 15, at Charlotte Street, he stole an Apple iPhone, valued $120,000 and the property of Jagan.

Bransville, who resides at Lot 169 Charlotte Street, and would usually clean Jagan’s car, denied the allegation when it was read to him. Police Prosecutor Kerry Botswick explained that on the day in question, Jagan left his phone in the driver’s seat pocket and gave the defendant his keys to wash his car.

He further stated that Jagan returned to his car and discovered that the phone was missing.

When given the chance to speak, Bransville explained that he usually washes Jagan’s car but would not steal from him. He stressed that he washed the car on Monday but did not receive any complaints from Jagan about the stolen phone until Wednesday.

The prosecutor objected to the defendant being granted bail, based on the nature of the offence and the punishment it attracts. The prosecution stressed that the stolen item had not been recovered.

After listening to submissions, the presiding magistrate denied the defendant bail.

The matter continues on February 15.
