Surujbally calls for efficiency at continuous registration review

Guyana Elections Commission (Gecom) Chairman Dr. Steve Surujbally yesterday called on registration officers to demonstrate “unswerving efficiency” during the conduct of the ongoing continuous registration cycle.

This challenge was made during remarks that Surujbally delivered at a one-day meeting of the senior managers of the Gecom Secretariat and the Registration Officers attached to the national registration offices, Gecom said in a statement yesterday.

The meeting, which was held at the Hotel Tower, was held to enable participants to report on the first two weeks of the continuous registration exercise, to discuss and make recommendations regarding issues that have arisen to date during the process and any administrative issue which might be affecting the implementation of the exercise, the statement added.

Chief Election Officer Gocool Boodoo, Deputy Chief Election Officer Calvin Benn, Assistant Chief Election Officer Keith Lowenfield, and Civic and Voter Education Manager Deolall Ramlall were identified as the resource persons at the workshop.

The current registration exercise, which is the fourth of its kind, was initiated on January 21, 2013 and will run until May 18, 2013. Anyone who will be 14 years or older by June 30, 2013, and is a Guyanese citizen by birth, descent, naturalisation, or is a citizen from a Commonwealth country living in Guyana for one year or more, is eligible for registration during this registration exercise. Eligible persons can visit the registration office that is responsible for their areas of residence to apply to be registered.
