GDF Lance Corporal promoted posthumously

GDF Lance Corporal, Eon Blair, who died during a fitness run, has been promoted posthumously to the rank of Substantive Corporal with effect from January 18, 2013.

A release from the Guyana Defence Force yesterday said that Chief of Staff, Commodore Gary Best has approved the promotion which is in “recognition of the deceased Corporal’s sterling contribution to the Force.”

Blair was given a military funeral on Monday last, at Number 49 Village, Corentyne. Commodore Best together with other Officers and Ranks of the Force joined Blair’s family in mourning his passing, the release said.

Blair of 305 Number Fifty-One Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was participating in the five-mile run with other members of his unit when he experienced chest pains in the vicinity of the Umana Yana on High Street. The GDF said that he was immediately placed into the accompanying ambulance and taken to the Force’s Medical Centre in Camp Ayanganna, then subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he died.

Lance Corporal Blair was a serving member for nine years, having enlisted in 2004.
