Pomeroon boat crash captain charged with manslaughter

Boat captain Hytilall Ramandahin was yesterday charged with manslaughter and released on $600,000 bail after he appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Charity Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on December 18, 2012, Ramandahin, 58, of Dredge Creek, Upper Pomeroon River, being the driver of his boat, caused the deaths of Harrinarine Bhagwandin, Velda Rodrigues, Shawn Anthony, Rajkumar Singh, Amerita Singh and Vincent Singh.

A police press release stated that the charge resulted from investigations into the boat collision at Siriki, Upper Pomeroon River. Bhagwandin, Rodrigues, Anthony, and the three Singhs who were related, all lost their lives when the boat they were travelling in collided with Ramandahin’s boat which was transporting workers from the one laptop per family (OLPF) project.

Ramandahin will make his next court appearance on February 18.
