$100,000 bail each for duo accused of robbery

A duo charged with robbery was yesterday granted $100,000 bail each, but the second accused was remanded on another charge, when they appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Peter Waldron and Akeem Hamer, 21, is that on February 4 at Commerce Street, Georgetown they stole from the person of Troyton Lam a wallet containing US$60, a national identification card and $3,700, all totalling $15,700.

Both Waldron, of 291, North East La Penitence, and Hamer, of 20 Middle Street, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara were unrepresented by counsel and pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them.

Hamer was also charged with another count of robbery, which he pleaded not guilty to. The other allegation against Hamer is that on February 1, at Georgetown, he stole from the person of Samantha Lewis, a gold chain valued at $80,000. Hamer, a miner, told the court that this was his first charge.
Facts about what transpired on February 4 were not related to the court.

When the magistrate asked if the prosecution had any objection to bail, Police Prosecutor Sampson objected citing the nature of the offence and the punishment it attracts. She also submitted that if the men were granted bail, there is a likelihood that they may not return to court to stand trial.

When the magistrate asked the prosecution to explain why the prosecution believed that the two accused would not return to court for trial, she withdrew her submission.

Waldron and Hamer were each granted $100,000 bail on that charge.
When Hamer was given a chance to address the court on his second charge, he said that he had never seen the virtual complainant before. He said this is the first time he had seen the woman and he never knew that he had been charged with a crime. He also said that he had seen the woman walk into the police station with another woman.

The prosecution objected to bail for Hamer, taking into consideration that he has another matter before the court. He was denied bail on this charge and remanded.
Both men were ordered to appear in court on February 27.
