Man remanded over theft of gas cylinders

A man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was accused of stealing two gas cylinders with gas from an Irving Street residence, when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on March 16, 2012 and January 26, 2013, at Irving Street, Queenstown, Keon Crandon, 32, stole gas cylinders valued $80,000 each property of Aziz Nezamudeen and Asiah Nezamudeen.

Crandon who resides at Lot 86 Hill Street, Albouystown, pleaded not guilty to the simple larceny charges when they were read to him by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell.

Police Prosecutor Alexis David-Hossanah said that on the day in question, the accused was seen in the yard moving the gas cylinder by a security guard who called to him.

She further stated that the accused pulled out a knife on the security guard and made good his escape.

When given a chance to speak, Crandon explained that he knew the security guard but they had a misunderstanding. He claimed the security guard told him, ‘‘I gon mek yuh go to jail.”

He added that he had spent some time in the Brickdam Police Station for the same matter last year.
He maintained that he knew nothing about the incident that occurred last month.

When asked if they had any objection to the defendant being granted to his pre-trial liberty, the prosecution responded in the affirmative citing that the defendant has pending matters in court.

The prosecution added that Crandon had given the police a different address.
After listening to submissions, the presiding magistrate refused bail and remanded the defendant to prison.
The matter will continue on March 5.
