Lions Club donates signpost to school for handicapped

Persons who need to find the David Rose School for Handicapped Children can now do easily since the Lions Club of Georgetown has donated a signpost identifying the school’s location down a gap, off Thomas Road, Thomas Lands, between the National Park and the Guyana Defence Force Headquarters.

The school caters for special needs children who are deaf or are mentally challenged.  It has 196 children and 36 teachers.
According to a release from the club, many parents, guardians and even taxi drivers were not aware of the school, much less its location.  The Headteacher, Dionne McKenzie confessed that she, too, did not know where the school was located when she was appointed five years ago.

The Lions Club of Georgetown has had a long history with the David Rose School since 1968 when the club was responsible for laying the foundation of the school building, chairperson for the Education and Youth Committee of the club, Lynette Baird said.  She noted that the signpost would be beneficial to members of the public and possibly more special needs children would be guided to the school.
