Region One shop burglary accused granted bail

An 18 year old man was placed on $75,000 bail after he was charged with break and entering, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Tuesday, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that between February 6 and 7 at Big Creek Back Dam, North West District, Region 1, Harvey George of 192 North Sophia, broke and entered the shop of Titus Archer and stole a quantity of male clothing valued at $114,000, a cell phone valued at $15,000 along with other items all valued at $149,000.

George, who said he was a miner in Region1, was unrepresented by counsel and pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

No facts about what transpired on the day in question were related to the court.

Police prosecutor Seon Blackman had no objections to George being granted substantial bail. He also asked that he report to the Port Kaituma Police Station.

The presiding magistrate after listening to submissions granted the accused bail in the sum of $100,000.

The accused however told the court that he could not afford to post that amount of bail and asked if it could be reduced by at least $50,000.

The prosecution was asked by the magistrate if there was any objection to granting George a reduction. Blackman objected to the reduction saying that it was a substantial amount.

The prosecution’s objection was noted by the magistrate and George was only granted a reduction of $25,000.  His bail was set at $75,000 and he was ordered to report to the Port Kaituma Police station, every Friday at 08:00hrs.

He will make his next court appearance on May 7, at the Matthews Ridge Magistrates’ Court.
