Guyanese fisherman stabbed to death in Suriname

A Guyanese fisherman was stabbed to death in neighbouring Suriname on Sunday night under unclear circumstances. The attacker is said to be in police custody.

Confirmed dead is Clayton Jones, 25, of Riverview, Unity, East Coast Demerara.

His aunt Roxanne Jones told Stabroek News last evening, that relatives received the shocking news earlier in the day. She said that they have received different versions of what transpired.

She said one version is that the attacker— who is also Guyanese—and Jones had an old grievance that started from here. Another, according to her, is that Jones had won some money in a casino and was attacked on his way back to where he was staying.

According to Roxanne, today they would try to ascertain how they can get his remains back to Guyana.

Jones, the father of a two-year-old girl, left Guyana less than two weeks ago, she said. She said that most of the men in her immediate family are fishermen.
She recalled that she last spoke with him three weeks ago and at no time did he express any fear of living or working in the Dutch-speaking country.
Roxanne said that she will remember him as a loving and kind person who always made her smile.
Jones was due home later this week for Mashramani celebrations.

He also leaves to mourn his mother Marlyn Melville and 13 siblings.
