Broken sewerage pipe causes foul odour in Kingston

A broken sewerage pipe at the corner of High and Barrack streets, Kingston has residents complaining about the stench it has been producing and the inconvenience it has been causing them.

Sewage has been overflowing in the middle of the road that vehicles and people traverse every day, they said.

Residents told this newspaper that the problem has been occurring for about a week now. They noted that the situation is hazardous; not only smelly but very insanitary. Four residents who declined to give their names said it was especially unhealthy for small children and that the odour has been upsetting them.

One resident said that the pipe had broken before, sometime last year, and it was fixed by Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI).

Subsequently, the woman said, a crack developed and it began leaking. As vehicles continued to use the road, the pipe eventually broke again.

Asked whether the situation had been reported to the authorities, all four of the residents said they had not done so.

However, they complained that the situation has been affecting pedestrians using the road, since vehicles pass by and splash the filthy water on them.
