Labourer, 17, remanded on gun, ammo charges

A 17-year-old labourer was yesterday remanded to prison after he was arraigned in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, on charges he had in his possession a firearm and ammunition without being the holder of a valid licence.

It is alleged that on February 23, Royston Griffith, of Lot 117 Campbellville Housing Scheme, had in his possession one .32 revolver weapon without being the holder of a valid firearm licence. It is also alleged that on the same day he had in his possession, 3 live .32 rounds.

Griffith who was unrepresented by an attorney, pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him by Magistrate Alex Moore.
No details of what transpired on the date in question were provided in court.

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that the accused poses a flight risk and there are still more charges to be instituted.
Griffith was ordered to appear in court on March 14.
