Man on bail over stick-up at wake

A man was yesterday accused of robbing a miner of gold and cash at a wake in the North West District.

The allegation against Rob Craig is that on March 3, at North West District, he stole five pennyweights of raw gold and $38,000 in cash, from Rob Deveaux.
Craig pleaded not guilty to the robbery charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The attack occurred around 12:10am while Craig and Deveaux were at a wake, according to Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman.

He stated that Deveaux and a female were at the side of a shop and when the woman left, Deveaux was confronted by Craig and an accomplice who was armed with a beer bottle.

He added that the accomplice took Craig’s bag, searched it and took the items mentioned in the charge.
Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, who represented Craig, asked that his client get reasonable bail.

After listening to the submissions, the magistrate granted Craig bail in the sum of $125,000 and the matter was transferred to Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court.
