-trial hears

A police detective yesterday testified that he shot at murder accused Rondell Bacchus, who had pointed a gun at him.

Bacchus is on trial in the High Court for the murder of Akbar Alli, whom he is accused of fatally shooting during a robbery on July 24, 2008.

Detective Prem Narine, who was among the party of policemen that arrested Bacchus, yesterday told Justice Navindra Singh and a 12-member jury that on August 15, 2008, he saw Bacchus, who was known to him, in the vicinity of Church Street.

Narine said that he followed Bacchus, who eventually turned towards him with a gun in his hand. As a result, Narine said he shouted, “Police! Drop the weapon!”

According to the detective, Bacchus raised his weapon at him and he drew his own weapon in return and fired a shot. As a result, he said Bacchus dropped his gun and ran away. Narine said he picked up the gun and gave chase behind him.

He did not find him.

Narine, however, testified that later on August 21, he received information and he and other ranks went to a house in ‘C’ Field, Sophia, where they found Bacchus groaning. Bacchus, who had a wound to his left hand that was smelly, he said, was arrested and taken to the Georgetown Hospital for treatment.

Defence counsel Peter Hugh will cross examine Narine today. Prosecutors Konyo Thompson and Dhanika Singh are leading the state’s case against the accused.

Bacchus, of ‘C’ Field, Sophia, was charged with Andrew Morris, with  the murder of Alli.

The duo had allegedly used a gun to rob the wife of the deceased, Bibi Hydar Alli, of $2.1 million in cash and fatally shot her husband in the process. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had subsequently withdrawn the charge against Morris due to the lack of evidence.

Alli, a scrap iron dealer, and his wife had gone to a city bank to do business.

They later went to Brickdam with the intention of transacting business with an auto dealer when they were robbed at gunpoint by two men on a motorcycle.
