Accused police station escapee denied bail

A labourer was refused bail yesterday after he was accused of escaping from police custody.

Rawle Wallace, 40 of 705 East Ruimveldt, Housing Scheme, was also charged with simple larceny when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Wallace pleaded not guilty to both charges when they were read to him.

Magistrate Judy Latchman heard that on January 4, at the East La Penitence Police Station, Wallace, while being in lawful custody of a police inspector pending an investigation into a simple larceny matter, escaped.

The Magistrate also heard that between December 20, 2012 and December 31, 2012, at Georgetown, Wallace stole a tent, valued $40,000, a quantity of clothes and shoes and alcoholic beverages, all totaling $83,500 in value and property of Michelle King.

Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt objected to bail and described Wallace as a flight risk. He pointed out that it was while the defendant was in custody on the simple larceny charge that he tried to escape.

Wallace was subsequently remanded until May 10, when both matters will be heard again.
