German tourist dies in Lethem accident

A German national was yesterday afternoon killed and his wife injured on the Meeterzero Road in Lethem, Region 9 when his vehicle careened off the road.

Seventy-four year-old Helmut Utmann died instantly while his wife, 73-year-old Inga Utmann is a patient at the Lethem Hospital nursing a dislocated shoulder and abrasions to her body.

A Lethem resident told Stabroek News that the couple was driving their pickup in the vicinity of the old oil company, which is about 35 miles north of Lethem, heading to Georgetown, when Helmut apparently lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle skidded off the road toppling in the process before turning over and pinning the 74-year-old.

By the time rescuers were able to free him he was already dead. His wife was taken to the Lethem Hospital where she is waiting to be transferred to the city for follow up care sometime later today.
