Bus driver, bystander shot in hold-up near High Court

Two persons were shot yesterday during an armed robbery near the High Court.

Lex Carpen, 57, of Little Abary, Mahaicony, who was the target of the attack, was shot in the right knee, while bystander Cherelee Cosbert was hit on her left foot.

Police said the attack occurred at about 11am, when Carpen was sitting in his bus at Charlotte Street and Avenue of Republic, Georgetown, in the vicinity of the High Court.

Carpen told Stabroek News that the two robbers rode up alongside his bus and the gunman told him to “give me the bag with the money.”

He complied. “I told him look the bag is there,” he said.
However, Carpen, who is a firearm holder, said that he got out of the bus and was going to fire a round at the two men but the safety on his gun was on and the robber who had come around the side of the bus fired his gun. Two rounds were discharged in his direction and one caught his right knee. The robbers relieved him of $217,000 and as they men were about to flee on their motorcycle, they discharged a round which hit Cosbert.

Cosbert told this newspaper that she had just come out of the High Court compound and all she heard were shots and the next thing she knew she was on the ground.

Both Carpen and Cosbert were both treated at the Georgetown Hospital and discharged yesterday.
