No bail for ex-con accused of stealing from aunt

A 28-year-old man was yesterday remanded to prison on a break-and-enter-and-larceny charge when he appeared before Magistrate Alan Wilson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Calvin Frances (no address given) is that on April 11, at Georgetown he broke and entered the dwelling house of his aunt Jennifer Blair and stole a quantity of clothing valued $360,000, a flat-screen television valued $60,000 along with some travel documents, property of the said Blair.

He was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.

Frances who was unrepresented by an attorney told the court that he works as a labourer at the ice house and he lives on the street. No facts about what transpired on the day in question were related to the court. Police Prose-cutor, Corporal Renetta Bentham told the court that at this stage of the matter she would object to Frances being admitted to bail since he has no fixed place of abode and if he is to be released on bail there is a possibility he might not return to court to stand trial.

Bentham also objected citing the nature and seriousness of the offence. She said that Frances came out of prison three weeks ago; where he served a three-year sentence for a crime of similar nature. She also pointed out that the virtual complainant (VC) in the matter is Frances’ aunt.

The matter continues on April 30.
