Stevedore remanded over possession of ‘medicinal’ ganja

A stevedore was remanded to prison yesterday after he was found with 60 grammes of marijuana in his possession which he claimed he uses to treat his asthma.

It is alleged that on April 22, at 167 Curtis Street, Albouystown, Dexroy Brimo, 38, had in his possession 60 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Brimo admitted that he had the drug in his possession and he said he uses it to treat his asthma. “Since I start use it, it does keep it down,” he told the court.

Magistrate Judy Latchman after hearing this explanation recorded a not guilty plea for him.

The prosecutor, Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt stated that on the day in question at about 13:40hrs, ranks from the narcotics branch, acting on certain information, went to the home of the defendant at 167 Curtis Street, Albouystown and conducted a search in his presence.  The cannabis was found and he admitted ownership. The prosecutor indicated to the court that Brimo had been convicted over 10 years ago for the possession of narcotics. Hunt objected to bail citing the nature and seriousness of the offence.

He was remanded to prison.

His matter was then assigned to court one before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

She ordered that he appear in court five on April 29.
