Essequibo woman remanded on drug trafficking charges

An Essequibo woman, who was previously convicted for drug trafficking, was yesterday remanded to prison after she was arraigned on new drug charges.

It is alleged that on April 24, at Anna Regina, Ernissa Thomas, 37, of 21 Wiser Castle, Essequibo Coast, had in her possession 10 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

It was also alleged that on the same day, at the same location, Thomas had in her possession four grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

No further details related to the charges were related to the court.

Thomas pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Police Corporal Vinetta Pindar, who served as prosecutor, objected to bail, while noting Thomas’ prior conviction for trafficking in narcotics.

She also pointed out that the court was not provided with any special reasons as to why the defendant should be released on bail.

The magistrate remanded Thomas to prison until May 8, when the case will be called at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.
