Marlon Braithwaite, who is on trial in the High Court for killing his ex-girlfriend, may know his fate in just under a week when a verdict is expected to be delivered.
State prosecutors Dhanika Singh and Tishana James as well as defence counsel Bernard De Santos made their closing arguments to the jury yesterday.
Justice James Bovell-Drakes is expected to sum up the evidence in the case and hand it over to the jury for deliberation next Tuesday.
Braithwaite, of Buxton, East Coast Demerara, is charged with the murder of Sharmin McKay, his ex-girlfriend. It is alleged that on June 10, 2009, at Bachelor’s Adventure Backlands (Bare Root), the accused repeatedly stabbed McKay, inflicting wounds that resulted in her death.
Braithwaite, who was called upon to lead his defence earlier in the trial, gave an unsworn statement in which he claimed that he was innocent of the crime.
