Mc Doom man remanded over robbery

A 51-year-old man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with robbery when he made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Ryan Benjamin of Middle Street, Mc Doom is accused of robbing Shenelle Grant of a gold chain valued $100,000, a gold band valued $60,000 and US$20.

Benjamin pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Benjamin who was unrepresented by an attorney told the court that he had no pending matters or previous convictions. He stated that he and Grant once shared a relationship and one day he saw her on the bus park hugging another man.

Benjamin claimed that Grant told him she was going to lock him up and he asked her for what.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Vishnu Hunt objected to bail citing the prevalence and nature of the offence. He added that he is afraid that if Benjamin is to be released on bail he might not return to court to stand trial; he also noted that he might tamper with the witnesses and try to pervert the court’s course of justice.

The matter was then transferred to court one before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry who ordered that he make his next court appearance on May 10.
