A public seminar on Guyanese oral literature will be held today at 5 – 6.30pm at the Education Lecture Theatre of the University of Guyana, a release from the university said.
Final year students of English and Education, Rosalie Seepaul and Chandrani Brijlall, who have been studying oral literature (traditional storytelling) and collecting samples of Guyanese folklore, narratives, proverbs, and other oral traditions in different parts of the country will make presentations. They will be joined by folk researcher/performer Michael Khan, performer Natasha Azeez and comedian and education student Kerwyn Mars, who will assist in presenting the stories collected in the field.
A release from the university said that this seminar will inform the public about oral narratives and oral poetry, about important folk beliefs and traditions and about the research carried out by the students of the University of Guyana. The exercise will also allow students trained in the scientific collection and analysis of data to present to an audience.
The material will be added to the collection of Guyanese folklore, traditions and oral literature to help preserve the Guyanese heritage.
