Man held with $4M suspected to be stolen from Stabroek Market stall

Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green confirmed on Friday that a man was held at the Bourda City Police Outpost after he was caught in the Stabroek Market with a cache of $4 million in cash and phone cards, suspected to be stolen from a stall.

The Mayor said that information reaching him suggested that the man had secreted himself in the market prior to it being closed for the day on Thursday and broke into a stall during the night.

According to the Mayor, it was reported that upon being accosted the man attempted to kill himself. He was however apprehended and taken into custody.

In a comment to this newspaper, Green said that he does not understand why persons leave such large amounts of money in their stalls.
