Supreme Court hosting domestic violence workshop

The Supreme Court of Guyana in collaboration with UN Women yesterday inaugurated a two- day Domestic Violence Workshop for magistrates, court clerks and other court service providers, a release from Tagman media said.

In declaring the workshop open, Acting Chancellor of the Judiciary,Carl Singh, said that “this workshop is part of the court’s efforts to enable proper, timely and competent judicial intervention.”

The Chancellor added that “… with Domestic Violence on the increase in Guyana it is imperative that court personnel are properly trained to effectively respond to Domestic Violence matters.”

The release said that the objectives of the workshop are to 1. To develop standard practice among court personnel in the implementation of the Domestic Violence Act. 2. To equip ‘front-line’ court service-providers with information for a more comprehensive response in addressing the needs of complainants. 3. To strengthen the capacity of the Magistracy to respond. 4. To help Clerks of Court and Social Workers prioritise cases.

The release said that workshop facilitators were. Justice Roxanne George, Judge of the Supreme Court;  Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, Chief Magistrate; Allan Wilson, Magistrate; Ann Green, Director, Child Care & Protection Agency; and  Karen De Souza, National Co-ordinator, Red Thread.

The release added that this is the second workshop on issues relating to Domestic Violence and the Judiciary in Guyana with support from UN Women.
