Two men charged along with a woman with two counts of armed robbery yesterday attacked police after they were denied bail at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It was alleged that Samantha Primo, Shaven Williams and Duke Lasaul on May 19, at South Road, while being armed with a knife, robbed Harrinand Persaud of a BlackBerry cell phone, valued $45,000, a silver chain, valued $25,000 and $10,000 cash, totalling $75,000. It is also alleged that on the same day they also robbed Intiaz Alli of a cell phone, valued $7,500 and $4,000 cash.
They were not required to plead to the charges and were subsequently remanded to prison until June 3 by Magistrate Judy Latchman, who heard the case.
The prosecution objected to bail, noting that there is the likelihood that the accused would not return to court. It was also noted that one of the accused currently has a pending matter in court for simple larceny.
Primo, 33, of Lot 50 Castello Housing Scheme, maintained her innocence of the robberies.
Outside of the courtroom, it was total chaos as Lasaul and Williams attempted to resist officers and in the process attacked several of them. Police tried to restrain the men, who were yelling out that they did not commit any crime and that they were being framed. An officer was also kicked in the stomach by one of the accused. Family members of Lasaul were crying and screaming out against what they said was police brutality on him. Another prisoner, who was not handcuffed in the dock, saw this as an opportunity to escape and in the process was shoved into a reporter by a plain clothes officer who stopped him.
