La Jalousie businesswoman beaten, robbed in home invasion

A businesswoman was beaten and robbed at gunpoint by three bandits at her La Jalousie, West Bank Demerara home yesterday.

A safe with an undisclosed amount of cash and jewellery was carted off fromthe home of Bagmattie Puran, proprietor of Golyn and Sons Fashion, located on Robb Street, who was up to yesterday afternoon still grimacing in pain from the beating inflicted at the hands of the robbers.

Police Crime Chief Seelall Persaud yesterday said that investigations were in progress. He said that a .32 pistol was taken away along with a safe containing cash and jewellery.

When Stabroek News visited her Gap Street, La Jalousie home, Puran explained that she did not want to speak with the press. She did, however, say that she was “feeling better,” when asked how she was coping.

A source told Stabroek News that sometime Tuesday evening, Puran and her employees were packing away items they had received in a container when three men entered the house. One of the men was armed with a handgun. They began hitting the woman as they told the other occupants of the house to remain silent and ordered that all valuables be handed over to them.

Puran directed them to the safe but noted that she did not have the combination to open it. The ordeal is said to have lasted less than 20 minutes. In the process of ransacking the woman’s house, the men also found the gun, which they also took.
The source said that the men escaped in a waiting car.
