City to meet power company over $1B debt

A team from the Mayor and City Council  (M&CC) is scheduled to meet with officials from the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) today to discuss the council’s electricity debt which is over one billion dollars.

This decision was made yesterday at the meeting held with members of the finance committee and other councillors. Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green called a press conference afterwards and informed reporters about the decision.

He said that the meeting will be held at 9:30 am and he hopes that they arrive at a non-contentious arrangement at the end of the dialogue. The mayor added that they have also examined all the financial factors and historical discussions that they have had with GPL.

GPL advised the council on Friday to liquidate its $1,090,525,575 debt owed up to April by June 15 or be disconnected. Green had stated that more than half of the bill is a result of street lights and as such if power should be disconnected it should be to the street lights.
