Accused in stabbing committed suicide day before trial

Michael Rodney, who is accused of stabbing another man, killed himself by drinking gramoxone just a day before his trial was scheduled to start, his lawyer said yesterday.

Maritha Halley, counsel for Rodney, told Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court that she had been informed of her client’s demise from his sister yesterday morning, moments before the trial was set to commence.

Rodney had been charged with stabbing David Shepherd to his side on March 21. He had denied the allegation.

A death certificate is to be produced to the court by June 24 before the proceedings are formally closed.
