Marketing corporation to host coconut exposition tomorrow

To highlight coconut and coconut products’ development, the Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) will host a ‘Grand Coconut Exposition’ tomorrow from 09:00 to 16:00hrs at the Guyana Shop, Robb and Alexander Streets, Lacytown, Georgetown.

A release from the GMC said that coconut, the agricultural product with the third largest contribution to the GDP, after rice and sugar, is being recognised by the Ministry of Agriculture which is currently focusing on a very aggressive agricultural diversification programme. It has identified the coconut industry with a large potential for further development, as an important component of their focus on non-traditional crops.

The release pointed out that developing the coconut industry will require coordinated efforts from all stakeholders. GMC will continue to collaborate with the coconut stakeholders so as to better respond to market needs and to the evolving nature of the industry.

According to the GMC, coconut production increased from 10,725 MT in 2011 to 17,104 MT in 2012.  In 2012, export of coconut and coconut products recorded in excess of US$2.4 million.

The coconut exposition is intended to create greater awareness and to promote market opportunities that exist for coconuts and coconut-based products.  The GMC listed some of the products that will be on display including extra virgin coconut oil, coconut water, canned coconut cream and milk, coconut wine, coconut dishes and coconut craft. There will also have presentations on innovative and new technologies, proper post harvest management, improved farming practices and latest export requirements.
