Person of interest sought in Brazilian woman’s murder

The police are looking for a person of interest in connection with the June 11 murder of Brazilian national Maria Jose Assis Bazerra and so far there is nothing to suggest that robbery was the motive, Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said yesterday.

Persaud, when contacted, said that the 11 men who were initially arrested in connection with the woman’s death have been released and the police are now looking for a person of interest. The bloodied body of the 47-year-old woman was found at a mining camp at Tiger Creek Backdam, at Mahdia.

Reports are that the woman’s husband had left her and some workers in the mining camp in the area on the day she was killed to travel to a Potaro location to search for more workers. The woman was later discovered bloodied and with her wrists tied.

Police later revealed that she had suspected stab wounds to the head. A post-mortem examination revealed that she died as a result of blunt trauma to the head, a fractured skull and brain hemorrhaging.
