Essequibo man jailed four years for human trafficking

An Essequibo Coast businessman was on Tuesday sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of trafficking in persons.

Officials from the Police Public Relations Department said yesterday that Chaitram Persaud, 40, of Columbia, Essequibo Coast made his first court appearance on December 24 last. This newspaper was told that when the man appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, Magistrate Sunil Scarce sentenced him to four years.

The circumstances surrounding the charge were unclear, but this newspaper was informed that the victim was an underage girl.
