Auto dealer remanded on ganja charge

A 41-year-old auto dealer was yesterday remanded to prison after he was accused of having 30.4 grammes of cannabis in his possession.

Kirk Brown of Lot 45 Norton St, Lodge pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

According to Attorney James Bond, the police visited the defendant’s home and conducted a thorough search of his home, all the vehicles in his yard and a neighbour’s yard as well and found nothing.

Bond further stated that after all the vehicles were searched, a policeman suddenly called out claiming to have found the narcotic in a car that had already been searched. He further stated that since the defendant is an auto dealer all the vehicles in his compound are left unlocked and there is no proof that the narcotic belonged to the defendant.

Bond also stated that the defendant is being targeted by the police.

But Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru stated that the car in which the substance was found was parked under Brown’s house and that the defendant is currently on bail on a similar charge. As a result the prosecution objected to the request for bail to be granted to the defendant.

Brown was remanded to prison and a court date set for July 19.
