Local sleuths bypassed in US visa scam probe over fears of leaks

United States (US) officials have taken a decision not to contact local police about their widening investigation of an alleged visa scam at the US Embassy in Georgetown because of fears of confidentiality breaches, which may allow some of those involved to escape the dragnet, sources say.

Sources say former Consular Officer Edy Duran, 41 (not Ed Durante as was previously reported by this newspaper), the alleged mastermind behind the scheme, has provided some information and is making a plea deal from all indications.
