Rearing animals in residential areas against law

The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has warned those who rear large numbers of animals on their premises for commercial purposes to desist from this practice otherwise it will bring actions against them. The practice contravenes public health laws the M&CC said.

In a press release, the city council said some of the areas where this practice has been found are Sophia, Charlestown, Albouystown, La Penitence, Meadow Brook and Turkeyen. The council is also concerned that some citizens have been keeping their environment in a manner that is a nuisance to neighbours.

In May, officers from the environmental sanitation section of the Public Health Department served notices on several citizens in different wards for contravening Public Health Ordinance Chapter 145; these include overhanging trees, defective roof gutters, overgrowth of bushes, weeds and lo
ng grasses; absence of water closets and the rearing of animals (goats, pigs and chickens) in such a manner as to be a nuisance.

The M&CC wishes to remind the public that dirty surroundings contravene environmental laws as well as compromise the health of those who live in the community.
