Businessman on abuse charge ordered to keep the peace or face jail

A businessman accused of using abusive language to his wife has been ordered to keep the peace for a year or face a four-month jail term.

Trevor Bento, 51, of Lot 197 Orono-que Street, was charged after he allegedly used the language against Girleangela De Lima Oraqao on July 9, resulting in a breach of the peace.

Bento, a father of one, denied the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, who represented Bento, informed the court that his client’s wife no longer wished to offer evidence against her husband.

When the magistrate inquired whether counsel’s submission was in fact true, Oraqao, a Brazilian national who has been living in Guyana for the past five years, confirmed it to be so.

As a result, the magistrate dismissed the charge but placed Bento on a bond to keep the peace for 12 months, failing which he would face four months imprisonment.
