Man shot near Venezuelan border

A man was shot near the Guyana/Venezuela border on Wednesday, following a dispute with another man over a young woman.

Nigel Jerrick, 39, a miner, of Lot 40 Bee Hive, East Coast Demerara, is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he underwent surgery on Wednesday evening.

The shooting occurred at around 12 noon on Wednesday, when Jerrick was left by a friend to oversee his shop, located near the border. He said he saw a “Venezuelan girl,” whom he described as a friend, talking to another man. The girl, he said, eventually approached him and they started to talk to each other, apparently offending the man she had been speaking with earlier. As a result, Jerrick said the man started to get verbally abusive towards him and then left shortly after the brief confrontation to go and put on his pants.

Jerrick recalled that as he turned around, he saw the angry man pointing a shotgun towards him at close range and he was then shot once in the right arm and slightly grazed by the bullet at the right side of his abdomen.

Jerrick, who was still in pain yesterday, said his attacker fled the scene and the police are currently looking for him.
