Elderly guard succumbs after pummelling by robbers

Frederick Minty, the elderly security guard beaten bloody by two robbers at Stanley-town, New Amsterdam, last Thursday night, has succumbed to his injuries.

According to his son Ezra Minty, the family received a call at around 9:30pm on Sunday night from a Georgetown Public Hospital official who informed that the 78-year-old man had died.

The attack left Minty, of Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice, hospitalised with three broken ribs, a swollen face and bruises to his hands and feet. After beating him, the robbers escaped with Minty’s phone, bicycle and other possessions. No arrests have been made as yet.

The attack occurred at around 8pm at the compound that formerly housed the Nabi Nail factory on the Waterside of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, just after he had warded off the two men believed to be responsible for beating him.

“…He said two strapping guys came in the compound and he chased them out,” his daughter, Yonette Minty told Stabroek News on Saturday. “When he go and sit back, he felt something lash he… he said like them man came around from the back and start beating him,” she said, adding that her father told her they used a piece of wood to beat him. “He said they take the wood and hit him in his rib [cage] and punch him in his face and head,” she recounted, while adding that sometime after her father collapsed on the ground at the site, where he remained until he was found by a friend on Friday morning between 6am and 6:30am. He was initially hospitalised at the New Amsterdam Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
