No bail for driver charged over pedestrian’s death

Driver Suraj Ram, who allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian after losing control of his vehicle, was yesterday remanded to prison.

Ram, 41, of 378 Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving, when he appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that on August 12

, at around 12:00hrs, Ram was the driver of motor vehicle PHH 397. Jones said Ram was proceeding along the public road at a fast rate in wet conditions when he lost control of the car, hitting Frank Wilson who was walking on the parapet in the process.

The car then turned turtle, the prosecutor added.
Wilson was picked by public-spirited persons and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre; he was pronounced dead by doctors there.
Ram was remanded to prison until September 16, when the case will be called again.
