Mohammed had said that she was planning on leaving when the attack occurred but Samaroo claimed it was he who had packed bags to leave.

When contacted by Stabroek News, Samaroo yesterday said that his common-law wife would habitually abuse and taunt him. He said she did the same last Tuesday and he was under the influence of alcohol at the time and he attacked her because he could not take it anymore.

Samaroo added that he was remorseful and had spoken to his wife since the attack. He said she has indicated that she wants to give him another chance and has expressed an interest in them going to counseling to work out their problems.

However, Mohammed in an interview with this newspaper last week had said that she was done with her husband for good after enduring years of abuse at his hands. According to the woman, he had assaulted her on numerous occasions and that one time she even paid ranks at the Turkeyen Police Station $10,000 to drop a complaint that she had made against him.

The woman, who has since been discharged from the hospital, had also noted that Samaroo had been constantly calling her family to apologise for what he had done and threatening to commit suicide. “Since I deh in here, he deh calling them and saying how he sorry fuh wah he do and when I tek the phone and talk to he, he deh telling me how he love me and how he gon drink poison and kill he self,” she said.
