Taxi driver accused of road rage after accident

A taxi driver yesterday denied charges that he assaulted another driver with whom he was involved in an accident.

Troyford Chester, of Lot 8, ‘D’ Aguiar Street, Meadow Bank, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry charged with assault and damage to property. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

It was alleged that on August 19, at South Road, Georgetown, James Brown, the driver of motor vehicle PDD 9415 and Chester were involved in a vehicular accident. It was at the scene of the accident that Chester allegedly damaged one of the front doors of Brown’s car and assaulted him.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Bharrat Mangru told the court that Brown and Chester were involved in an accident. He said after the collision, Chester came out of his car and pulled open a front door of Brown’s car, damaging it in the process. He said Chester then kicked Brown about his body.

Prosecutor Mangru did not object to bail, which was set at $60,000 for the damage to property charge and $20,000 for the assault charge. Both matters will be called again on September 12.
