Storm zaps Demerara power

A thunderstorm accompanied by lightning yesterday shut down the Demerara Interconnected System.

A statement from the Guyana Power and Light said that around 8.22 am the transmission line between Garden of Eden and Sophia tripped, causing a total shutdown of the Demerara system. GPL said that the machines were quickly brought back into operation  and the restoration of power began at 8.33 am. The transmission line was returned to service at 8.40 am and full restoration achieved at 8.58 am.

GPL urged customers to report all localized faults to 226-4015/16 as it may not always be aware of problems.
